Answers to common questions about trimming thujas, hedges and ornamental shrubs, the work process and pricing.
The cost depends on the length, height and width of the hedge, the number of sides to be trimmed, the condition of the plants, site access and the volume of cut branches. Send us photos, approximate dimensions and the location of the property - we will prepare a preliminary estimate.
The best time depends on the plant species, their condition and the amount of trimming planned. Thujas and other conifer hedges are usually shaped in spring and summer, while avoiding frost, prolonged heat and drought.
Hedges are usually trimmed once or twice per season. Fast-growing and precisely shaped hedges may require more frequent maintenance. Regular, light trimming helps maintain a dense shape and reduces the need for major height or width corrections.
In many cases, the height can be reduced, but the safe amount depends on the plant species and the condition of the hedge. For overgrown thujas, a significant height reduction may sometimes be better carried out gradually to reduce the risk of plant damage and bare areas.
Not always. Thujas do not regrow well where branches have been cut back to old bare wood without green shoots. Before heavy trimming, we assess the thickness of the green growth and determine how much the particular hedge can be safely reduced.
Bare areas can appear if the hedge is cut too deeply into old wood. Browning can also be caused by drought, heat, winter damage, disease or branches that were already dry. Before starting, we assess the condition of the plants and explain if a completely green surface cannot be achieved immediately.
The bottom of the hedge should be slightly wider than the top. This shape allows sunlight to reach the lower branches and helps the hedge remain dense from top to bottom.
The right pruning time depends on the specific shrub. Spring-flowering shrubs are usually pruned after flowering, while many summer- and autumn-flowering shrubs are pruned in spring. Before starting, we identify the plant species so that next season's flower buds are not removed together with the branches.
Trimming is best avoided during prolonged rain, extreme heat or drought. Wet conditions can increase the risk of disease, while plants experience more stress after trimming in hot and dry weather. We choose the timing of the work based on the weather and the condition of the plants.
Before trimming, we check the hedge for active bird nests. If a nest is occupied, we postpone work in that area to avoid disturbing nesting birds or putting them at risk.
After the work, we collect the cut branches and leave the work area tidy. Green waste removal is available by agreement. The cost depends on the volume of branches and is agreed before the work begins.
