SERVICE QUESTIONS

What to know before we start.

Practical answers about hedge trimming, thuja planting and rolled turf laying.

Hedge and Thuja Trimming

Can the height of a very tall or overgrown thuja hedge be reduced?

In many cases, the height can be reduced, but before starting we need to assess the condition of the thujas and the intended cutting point. Thujas and other conifers have limited ability to regrow from old bare wood, so cutting too deeply may leave brown or bare areas.

How often should thujas and shaped hedges be trimmed?

Hedges are usually trimmed once or twice per season. Fast-growing or precisely shaped hedges may require more frequent maintenance. Regular, light trimming helps maintain a dense shape and reduces the need for major height or width corrections later.

Can only the top of the hedge be trimmed?

Yes. We can level only the top line, trim one or both sides, or fully shape the hedge. The scope of work is tailored to the specific situation and agreed in advance in the quote.

Do you collect green waste after trimming?

After the work, we collect the cut branches and leave the work area tidy. Green waste removal is agreed separately, as the volume depends on the length and height of the hedge and the amount of trimming required.

Thuja Hedge Planting

Which thujas are better for a hedge - Smaragd or Brabant?

Smaragd thujas form a narrower, neater shape and usually require less shaping. Brabant thujas grow faster and are well suited to dense, shaped hedges, but they need regular trimming. The choice depends on the desired height, hedge width and how much time you are prepared to spend on future maintenance.

How far apart should thujas be planted?

The spacing depends on the thuja variety, the size of the plants and the desired hedge density. Planting too closely increases competition for water and nutrients, while spacing them too far apart leaves visible gaps for longer. We determine the exact spacing based on the chosen plants and site conditions.

Does the soil need to be prepared before planting thujas?

Yes. Before planting, we assess the existing soil, moisture level and drainage. Compacted, very clay-heavy or constantly waterlogged soil can restrict root development. If necessary, we prepare the planting area and add suitable soil.

What should be done after planting thujas?

After planting, the most important thing is to provide regular and sufficient moisture throughout the root zone. The soil should remain evenly moist without being constantly waterlogged. Watering frequency should be adjusted according to the weather, soil conditions and the size of the plants.

Rolled Turf Laying

Can rolled turf be laid over an existing lawn?

For a high-quality, even result, rolled turf should not be laid directly over an old lawn. The existing grass, weeds and uneven top layer should be removed, and the ground levelled and prepared so the new turf can establish properly.

How is the ground prepared before laying rolled turf?

We remove unwanted vegetation and weeds, level the ground, prepare a fertile topsoil layer and create a firm, even surface. The base should be level and sufficiently firm, but not excessively compacted.

How often should newly laid rolled turf be watered?

The turf should be watered immediately after laying and kept evenly moist at first so the rolls do not dry out and the roots can begin growing into the prepared soil. In hot, sunny or windy weather, more frequent watering will be required.

When can you walk on new rolled turf and mow it for the first time?

Heavy use should be limited at first, until the turf has rooted and the rolls no longer lift easily. The first mowing should be done once the lawn has established and reached a suitable mowing height. The exact timing depends on the season, moisture levels and growth rate.
